The MockingOwl Roost is expanding our team of volunteer Staff! Join us as a book reviewer (with possible expansion to other writing).
No experience necessary as a reviewer, but writing skills a must — training provided, as needed.
PLEASE NOTE: We will only consider applications that include at least one 300+ word writing sample. Please make sure to include your sample or a link to that sample with your resume.
*What You'll Get Out of This:
Free, early access to books for review before publication.
Training and experience in writing book reviews, roundups, deep dives, and more.
Access to resources and benefits available to MockingOwl Roost (MOR) Staff, including personal edits and publication for your own works and free books to read and review.
An engaged, creative community ready to connect and encourage you in your passions.
Material and experiences for your resume.
References from the MOR staff, provided as needed if you remain with us for at least 6 months post-training. This ensures we’ll know your style well enough to give a great reference!
Possible expansion into other writing.
*What We’re Looking For:
Individuals who, as a group, represent a wide range of stories and life experiences.
A solid attention to detail and strong interest in reviewing books and other media for others to enjoy.
A willingness to grow, learn new skills, and adhere to our chosen Style Guide and general directives.
The ability to communicate professionally, consistently, and compassionately.
The ability to work and communicate with as little bias as possible. The pieces we publish will always fall within MOR's values, but you may at times be expected to review material that comes from a different viewpoint or experience than your own. However, we will never ask you to review works that make you uncomfortable.
Applicants who are at least 18 years old.
A passion for reading, books, and writing.
Can provide a minimum of 2 – 3 book reviews (word count: 300-750 per) or roundups each month (word count: 500–1000 per).
Have a reasonable grasp of the English language in written form. You do not need to be a native English speaker, but you do need to be able to express yourself in English without the use of translators or heavy editing.
Does any of that sound like you? If so, we’d love to consider your application!
We look forward to considering your applications to the MockingOwl Roost!
